On the homepage of my blog I have a countdown widget which is counting down the months until Star Wars Episode VIII is released. That’s not the first stand-alone Star Wars Anthology film Rogue One which is set for release later this year on the 16th December 2016 or the 15th December 2016 for Australian cinemas, but the next chapter in the ongoing saga that is Star Wars.
Although the next film hasn’t yet been named I took it upon myself to name it months ago when I decided to first put the countdown timer on my homepage. Of course, back when I first did that the release date of the movie was set for the 26th May 2017 or the 25th May 2017 for Australian cinemas. I believe that the original release date was to coincide with the Hollywood premier being shown the day before on the 25th May 2017 which would have been exactly 40 years to the day since the first movie, Star Wars: Episode IV – A New Hope, then just known as Star Wars was first shown in cinemas.
So what did I call the movie? Star Wars: Episode VIII – The Knights of Ren. It seems kind of obvious, doesn’t it? So what is it about? Well, read on…
As a fan of the epic movie soap opera, if I get some downtime, especially when alone with my 7-year-old son who is equally as big a fan, we watch YouTube channels such as Screen Rant, Star Wars Minute, Star Wars HQ, Dash Star and some others I’ve probably forgotten to mention (and there are a sit load of them, so that’s to be expected). Each channel has theories of their own or scours through the internet searching for fan theories on forums to report to their followers.
Speculation as to who are the parents of Rey, who Snoke really is, is Han Solo really dead… like I mean really, really and truly dead… the internet is abuzz with differing theories about so many of these things. Is Yoda coming back as a Force ghost to help train Rey? Was Luke’s hand that was holding the lightsaber that turned up in The Force Awakens found as well, and has it been cloned? Did Mace Windu actually die? Is he coming back?
There are just so many questions and theories that it’s hard to keep up with them, and some are really hard to get your head around. They are just not plausible.
But I have a theory of my own. It’s about the Knights of Ren. Or, should I say the Nights of Ren?
Earlier this year there have been many fan sites as well as mainstream media’s entertainment sites reporting that parts of Episode VIII have been filmed in the Croatian city of Dubrovnik where Luke Skywalker was reportedly filmed inside a casino. Those sites that are reporting this go on to suggest that Luke walks around the casino looking for someone, yet who he is looking for is up for debate.
What I believe that this represents is a flashback scene from when Ben Solo was a student of Luke’s Jedi training school. Although Ben is the nephew of Luke, he specifically didn’t want any special treatment which included him paying his own way through Jedi school.
To do this, Ben Solo took a job at a casino where he became quite the expert at not only making cocktails, but being theatrical whilst doing it. I mean, come on people… what would YOU do with your Jedi skills in the real world? I’d be making bottles of rum slide down a bar so that they look like they’re about to fall off and smash only to be rescued by my ability to make inanimate objects float.
So I was wrong. The title of the next instalment is not the Knights of Ren, but the Nights of Ren. And they’ll be hot and steamy nights, that’s for sure. Now, I just wonder who Ben Solo’s love interest will be?
What’s your favourite theory about the new movie?
